Iraq US withdrawal and militia disarmament

Overview

In late June 2026 Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al‑Zaidi gave Iran‑backed militias a 30 September 2026 deadline to surrender weapons or merge into state security forces, linking that deadline to the complete exit of the U.S. combat mission. On 14 July President Donald Trump and al‑Zaidi met at the White House and reaffirmed that all U.S. forces will leave Iraq by that date, invoking the 2024 bilateral security agreement. The Pentagon noted the U.S. presence had already been reduced to about 2,500 personnel – mainly advisers at Erbil, Baghdad airport and the Green Zone – from a peak of more than 170,000 troops after the 2003 invasion.

The July 14 announcement framed the withdrawal as the end of a 23‑year deployment, citing earlier drawdowns after 2011 and the 2014 fight against ISIS. While the military role will shrink to advisory tasks, limited air strikes against residual IS cells, and diplomatic‑commercial engagement, U.S. companies are expected to stay, especially in the oil sector. Completion of the militia‑disarmament deadline remains a precondition for the final exit; non‑compliance could trigger legal and financial penalties. Regional analysts note the shift from a security‑centered partnership to a commercial one may reshape dynamics among the United States, Iraq and Iran‑aligned groups.
