Iraq and Lebanon discuss reviving Kirkuk‑Tripoli oil pipeline and broader regional projects

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al‑Zaidi met Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam in Baghdad to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new economic alliances. Ali al‑Zaidi said the talks covered “ways to strengthen bilateral relations in economic, political and security fields,” while Salam emphasized Lebanon’s commitment to “strengthen connectivity and strategic integration projects.”

A central focus of the meeting was the possible relaunch of the historic Kirkuk‑Tripoli pipeline, which would carry Iraqi crude to the Mediterranean, providing an alternative route to the Strait of Hormuz amid regional tensions.

Both leaders highlighted deeper cooperation in energy, telecommunications and transport, with Lebanon seeking to become an active partner in regional projects that attract investment and support sustainable development.

The discussions build on a fuel‑supply agreement first reached in 2021 and renewed and expanded in July 2023.
