Iraq Zaidi: anti-corruption, narcotics, and militia pushback

Overview

By late August 2026, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s administration is intensifying its multi-front crackdown on organized crime and financial misconduct. The ‘Dawn Raid’ anti-corruption campaign has achieved significant scale; government spokesperson Hayder al-Aboudi announced the recovery of over 1.359 trillion dinars (approximately $1.032 billion) in assets, funds, and real estate. To bolster these efforts, the Integrity Commission has processed more than 26,000 corruption-related reports, and the government has activated an informant law offering rewards of up to 5% of the value of recovered funds.

Expanding the scope of domestic security, al-Zaidi has also launched a major offensive against narcotics. During a field visit to the General Directorate of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances, the Prime Minister pledged to achieve a “drug-free nation,” framing the fight against narcotics as a parallel war to the fight against corruption. He noted that Iraq is becoming a “regional leader in preventing its territory from being used as a transit point for smuggling.” To sustain this effort, al-Zaidi ordered the formation of a multi-agency committee to monitor narcotics, requiring monthly reports on seizures, smuggling routes, and the destruction of illegal substances.

Security tensions remain high as the September 30 deadline for militia disarmament approaches. While groups like Saraya al-Salam and Asaib Ahl al-Haq have moved toward integration, Kataib Hezbollah and Harakat al-Nujaba continue to reject the plan, vowing to retain “resistance weapons.” This defiance occurs against a backdrop of economic strain; while IMF estimates project foreign currency reserves to reach approximately $79.2 billion by 2026, experts warn that continued downward trends in reserves and heavy reliance on oil revenues necessitate urgent fiscal reform.
