Iraq PM Zaidi's anti‑corruption drive and US oil talks

Overview

Prime Minister Ali al‑Zaidi’s anti‑corruption campaign, launched with a June 28 raid that seized roughly $85 million in cash, gold, vehicles and weapons and later uncovered a 14‑billion‑dinar tax‑vault, has recovered more than 127 billion dinars. In July the High Judicial Council introduced a sentence‑reduction scheme that has already helped retrieve 365 billion dinars from officials who return misappropriated funds. The Counter‑Terrorism Service continues to target networks funneling oil revenues to Iran‑aligned militias.

In mid‑July Zaidi led a high‑level delegation to Washington (July 13‑18), meeting President Donald Trump and senior Iraqi officials including the central bank governor, finance minister and oil minister. The trip focused on securing U.S. investment in Iraq’s oil, gas and power sectors. Key agreements were signed with Chevron for upstream projects, a partnership with U.S.‑based HKN Energy to develop the Himreen field, and a cooperation pact with General Electric to expand electricity generation and transmission. Discussions also covered security guarantees for U.S. operators in the semi‑autonomous Kurdistan region and revived plans for export pipelines, notably the Kirkuk‑Baniyas line to Syria, aimed at bypassing the Strait of Hormuz.

Baghdad frames the outreach as a diversification effort away from Chinese, Russian and European partners after the “Iran war” cut crude output and strained state finances. Officials say the initiative should attract capital, transfer expertise, create jobs and help restore full access to Iraq’s overseas financial assets while reinforcing security cooperation with the United States.
