Iraq begins security transition following foreign troop withdrawal

Iraq has entered a new security and political phase following the completion of the withdrawal of foreign combat forces and the end of the US-led International Coalition's military mission. The Iraqi government views this transition as a decisive step toward reclaiming sovereign decision-making.

Sabah al-Noaman, spokesperson for the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, stated that Iraqi forces have finalized deployment and preparation plans for this new phase. The transition aims to move from operating under the Coalition banner toward a relationship based on parity and partnership. To bolster national security, Iraq is pursuing contracts to equip itself with advanced anti-aircraft defense systems to protect its airspace.

Despite the government's readiness, significant challenges remain. These include the potential for renewed activity from Islamic State cells in rural and peripheral urban areas, and the influence of armed factions linked to regional actors. Addressing these issues requires strengthening intelligence, regular patrols, and the coordination of national forces, alongside efforts to improve local governance and social reconciliation.
