Iraq dollar-to-dinar switch signals confidence; $14.5 M airline funds recovered
Iraqi citizens are increasingly exchanging US dollars for Iraqi dinars, with the parallel market rate tightening to around 151,000‑152,000 dinars per $100. Analysts view the shift as a grassroots sign of confidence that could precede a future dinar revaluation, especially as the Central Bank of Iraq undertakes reforms and aligns banking standards with international partners such as the IMF and the US Treasury.
In a separate anti‑corruption effort, Iraqi authorities recovered about 19 billion dinars (approximately $14.5 million) linked to a financial misconduct case at state‑owned Iraqi Airways. The funds were seized under Operation Dawn, the nationwide anti‑corruption campaign launched by Prime Minister Ali al‑Zaidi, and placed into a designated government account while investigations and restructuring of the airline’s finance and oversight bodies continue.
