Iraq to complete US military withdrawal by September 2026
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has announced that the United States' military presence in Iraq will be completely concluded by September 30, 2026. This date marks the final end of the US-led International Coalition's mission to combat Daesh.
The withdrawal is being conducted in phases. Following a 2024 agreement, the first stage of the plan was extended to January 2026. This process includes the transfer of facilities, such as the Ain al-Asad base, to the Iraqi Army.
Lieutenant General Abdul Amir Al-Shammari stated that the International Coalition's headquarters will close on the 2026 deadline and asserted that there are currently no foreign military bases on Iraqi soil. Despite the end of the formal military mission, Baghdad and Washington intend to maintain economic and security cooperation, specifically regarding intelligence sharing and armament programs. A specialized committee has been ordered to define the nature of these ongoing bilateral relations.
