Iraq prepares for final U.S. military withdrawal by September 2026

The United States is scheduled to complete its military withdrawal from Iraq by September 30, 2026, marking the end of a long-standing international coalition mission. Iraqi officials state that the departure is possible because national forces are increasingly prepared to manage security independently. Following the withdrawal, relations between Iraq and coalition members are expected to shift toward bilateral cooperation, including intelligence sharing and training.

However, the transition faces significant security challenges. The removal of U.S. air defense systems, such as Patriot missiles in the Kurdistan region, may leave gaps in defense against missile and drone threats. Additionally, the Iraqi government has issued an ultimatum for non-state armed groups and militias to disarm, a demand that most militias have indicated they will not meet.

Regional tensions remain a factor, as Iranian-backed militias have previously targeted U.S.-linked sites. While U.S. officials are concerned about the potential for continued militia activity, they have not indicated that these concerns will delay the withdrawal timeline. Remaining troops in northern Iraq are expected to be redeployed to Jordan and other regional locations.
