Iraq undergoes security restructuring and anti-corruption crackdown

Iraq is undergoing a major security and institutional restructuring driven by two primary developments: the scheduled withdrawal of the International Coalition and an intensified domestic anti-corruption campaign.

Following agreements to end foreign military presence, the International Coalition is set to conclude its operations in Iraq after September 30. This transition is occurring alongside domestic efforts to regulate armed factions and centralize control over weaponry through internal agreements.

Simultaneously, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior has dismissed 38 officers and 180 security personnel following judicial rulings regarding financial and administrative corruption. This action is part of the “Saulat al-Fajr” (Dawn Raid) campaign led by Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi. The campaign has reportedly resulted in the seizure of approximately $1 billion in assets and the arrest of various high-ranking officials, including former ministers and members of parliament.
