Iraqi MP Ashwaq Salem sentenced to 7 years for corruption

The Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court has sentenced Iraqi Member of Parliament Ashwaq Salem Hassan to seven years in prison for illicit enrichment. The ruling, announced by the Federal Integrity Commission, also addresses her conviction for concealing information in her financial disclosure forms, a crime carrying a three-year sentence. The court opted to apply the more severe penalty.

In addition to imprisonment, the court ordered the repayment of illicit gains totaling 2,114,820,000 Iraqi dinars and 2,924,100 US dollars. A fine equivalent to the value of the illicit enrichment was also imposed, bringing the total financial obligations to approximately 11,949,264,000 Iraqi dinars.

The court upheld the seizure of the defendant's movable and immovable assets and granted the Federal Integrity Commission the right to seek compensation for damages once the verdict becomes final.
