Iraqi parliamentary corruption convictions

Overview

The Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court in Iraq has issued prison sentences and significant financial penalties against members of the Iraqi Parliament for illicit enrichment.

In late September 2026, MP Ashwaq Salem Hassan was sentenced to seven years in prison. The court ordered the repayment of approximately 2.1 billion Iraqi dinars and 2.9 million US dollars, alongside a fine equivalent to the illicit gains, totaling roughly 11.9 billion Iraqi dinars. The court also upheld the seizure of her assets.

Shortly thereafter, MP Mohammed al-Jubouri, a representative for Ninawa Governorate and member of the Parliament’s Oil and Gas Committee, received a similar seven-year prison sentence. His financial obligations include the repayment of approximately 11.8 billion Iraqi dinars and 1.7 million US dollars, plus a fine that brings his total financial obligation to over 28 billion Iraqi dinars. The court upheld the seizure of his assets, which had previously been frozen by the Central Bank of Iraq.
