Iraqi PM Ali al-Zaidi to discuss US troops and economic ties in Washington visit

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al‑Zaidi is set to travel to Washington in mid‑July at the invitation of President Donald Trump. The agenda includes meetings with senior U.S. officials on political, security and economic issues, with a focus on the future of U.S. troops in Iraq and expanding economic cooperation.

Baghdad plans to propose a fund financed by Iraqi oil revenues to support infrastructure, electricity and other strategic projects, and seeks to raise oil shipments to the United States to 500,000 barrels per day in exchange for U.S. corporate involvement. The visit also aims to attract foreign investment, promote private‑sector reforms and bolster internal stability.

Al‑Zaidi’s government, which took office in May, emphasizes rebuilding the economy, reducing reliance on oil, curbing corruption and managing the influence of Iran‑backed militias while balancing relations with both Washington and Tehran. The trip follows a recent U.S.–Iran interim agreement and occurs under the existing Iraq‑U.S. strategic framework covering security, trade and cultural cooperation.
