Ireland faces heatwave while archaeologists uncover Neolithic timber dwellings

The Irish Met Eireann issued heat warnings as temperatures were expected to reach 30 °C in inland areas, urging caution over water safety, outdoor fire risks and temporarily banning disposable grills after recent wildfires. The dry spell also strained municipal water supplies in several western counties.

In County Waterford, archaeologists announced the discovery of two Neolithic timber houses dating to around 5,700 years ago, containing polished stone axes and evidence of early cross‑sea trade with north‑west England.

Separately, the national rail authority faced parliamentary scrutiny after a €50 million signalling‑software project was deemed unsuitable for deployment, delaying commuter‑line expansions. Aer Lingus also outlined a restructuring plan to adapt to changing trans‑Atlantic passenger demand, raising concerns about possible job cuts. Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan confirmed a Commission of Investigation into historic institutional care allegations will proceed.
