Ireland leads EU push for sanctions on Israeli settlements

Ireland is leading an effort within the European Union to establish a unified response to Israeli escalation in the West Bank. Irish Minister of State for International Cooperation, Neil Richmond, has called for expanded sanctions against Israel and settlers, as well as a ban on the entry of settlement goods and services into EU markets.

Richmond stated that Ireland has already banned the import of products originating from Israeli settlements and is working with partners, including Spain and the Netherlands, to encourage similar measures. The goal is to signal to the Israeli government that settlement expansion, land annexation, and violence against Palestinians are “unacceptable.”

Proposed measures include expanding existing sanctions to cover more individuals and entities involved in violations, and potentially reducing trade advantages Israel receives within its relations with the EU. Additionally, Richmond emphasized the necessity of continued humanitarian aid, specifically support for UNRWA, and the recognition of a Palestinian state to uphold the two-state solution. Ireland is set to host EU foreign ministers next week to discuss these developments.
