Ireland raises e‑scooter age limit to 18, mandates helmets and reflective gear

On 20 July the Irish government announced that riders of electric scooters must be at least 18 years old and wear helmets and reflective vests from August. The decree also foresees future requirements such as licences, vehicle registration and restrictions on sales to minors. Taoiseach Micheál Martin said a total ban on e‑scooters is still under consideration, but the current measures aim to curb a growing number of serious injuries among children.

Supporters argue the rules will improve road safety, while critics question enforcement, noting that a ban on riders under 16 introduced in May 2024 is widely ignored.
