Ireland to launch passport expiry reminder service in 2027

The Irish passport service is introducing a new opt-in electronic reminder service scheduled to launch in 2027. This service will notify citizens when their travel documents are due to expire, covering both first-time applicants and those seeking renewals. Due to data protection regulations, the service will only apply to passports issued from next year onwards to ensure contact details are accurate.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Helen McEntee confirmed the rollout, noting that the service aims to encourage citizens to apply for renewals well in advance of travel. This follows the recent launch of newly designed passport books and cards, which feature enhanced security measures and updated artwork including various Irish wildlife.

In the first half of this year, over 500,000 passports were issued across the island of Ireland. Officials continue to urge travelers to check their passport expiry dates before booking flights to avoid disruptions. For urgent needs, the Passport Offices in Dublin and Cork offer an Urgent Appointment Service.
