IRGC claims attack on LPG carrier NV Sunshine in Strait of Hormuz

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for an attack on the NV Sunshine, a large liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier owned by NatWit, in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the IRGC, the vessel was attempting to use an unauthorized route south of the strait, which triggered a massive fire in its engine room and propulsion system.

The IRGC has blamed the United States military for escalating maritime tensions in the region, alleging that U.S. involvement deceives shipping and insurance companies. The IRGC warned that enforcement against vessels using unauthorized routes will no longer be limited to the Strait of Hormuz but will extend throughout the region. Furthermore, the group threatened sanctions and punitive measures against shipping companies that cooperate with the United States.

Separately, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a different incident involving an unidentified projectile hitting a tanker near the UAE coast, causing a fire. While the crew was reported safe, the full extent of the damage and environmental impact remains unclear. These incidents contribute to a broader shipping crisis in the region, characterized by rising freight rates and increased risks for maritime transport.
