Iúri Leitão wins second world omnium title in Shanghai

Portuguese cyclist Iúri Leitão secured his second world title in the omnium at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai, China. Leitão finished the competition with 143 points, surpassing Belgium’s Fabio van den Bossche (129 points) and Germany’s Tim Torn Teutenberg (115 points). His performance included a victory in the scratch race and third-place finishes in both the tempo and elimination races.

In the men’s madison event, the Portuguese duo of Iúri Leitão and Ivo Oliveira earned the silver medal with 67 points. They were narrowly defeated by the Danish pair, Lasse Norman Leth and Carl-Frederik Bévort, who took the gold with 88 points. This result marks the best-ever performance for Portugal in the madison discipline at a World Championship.

Portuguese officials, including President António José Seguro and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, congratulated Leitão, describing his achievement as a source of national pride. The championships also served as a key component of the Olympic qualification cycle for the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
