UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai
Overview
The UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai, China, continue to serve as a qualification event for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
In the men’s omnium, Portugal’s Iúri Leitão claimed his second world title, securing gold with 143 points. His performance included a victory in the scratch race and third-place finishes in the tempo and elimination races, ultimately clinching the win during the points race. He finished ahead of Belgium’s Fabio van den Bossche, who took silver, and Germany’s Tim Teutenberg, who earned bronze. Leitão, a 28-year-old Olympic medalist, described the preceding week as “one of the most difficult of his career” due to personal and team pressures. Portuguese officials, including President António José Seguro and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, congratulated the athlete, noting the achievement as a source of national pride.
Leitão further extended his success in the men’s madison event, where he and partner Ivo Oliveira earned the silver medal with 67 points. They finished behind the Danish pair, Lasse Norman Leth and Carl-Frederik Bévort, who took gold. This result represents the best-ever performance for Portugal in the madison discipline at a World Championship.
In the women’s events, Great Britain’s Anna Morris secured the omnium title, followed by Japan’s Tsuyaka Uchino and Denmark’s Amelie Dideriksen. Mexico’s Yareli Acevedo, the defending champion from the 2025 Santiago event, finished 12th in the omnium and narrowly missed the podium in the points race, finishing fourth. Other Mexican performances included Yuli Verdugo placing ninth in the women’s time trial, while Andrea Robles finished 20th and Daniela Gaxiola was eliminated in the women’s keirin repechage. In the men’s category, Ricardo Peña finished 13th in the elimination race but was unable to complete the omnium.
