IRIS payment system sees rapid growth in Greece

Greek government official Kostis Hatzidakis has highlighted the rapid expansion of the IRIS instant payment system, noting its significant role in reducing banking transaction costs and driving digital transformation.

According to data released for 2025, the platform processed 126.4 million transactions with a total value of 10.9 billion euros. This represents a substantial increase in adoption compared to 2023. Active users grew from 2.2 million to 4.75 million, while registered freelancers using the system increased from 155,000 to approximately 600,000.

The system has seen particular growth in peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions, which rose from 20.4 million in 2023 to 111.4 million in 2025. Additionally, IRIS-based e-commerce transactions reached 12.4 million in 2025, totaling 4.76 billion euros.
