Growth of IRIS instant payments in Greece

Overview

The IRIS instant payment system in Greece has experienced significant growth and adoption. A joint study by DIAS and Capgemini Invent reported that in 2025, IRIS Payments accounted for approximately 70% of all instant payment volumes in the country, processing 126.4 million transactions totaling 10.9 billion euros.

Growth has been driven by both peer-to-peer (P2P) and person-to-professional (P2Pro) usage. P2P users increased from 500,000 in early 2020 to 4.75 million by the end of 2025, while registered professionals reached nearly 600,000. Government official Kostis Hatzidakis noted the system’s role in driving digital transformation and reducing banking transaction costs.

Data indicates a strategic shift in 2021 toward commercial expansion and ease of use, including the implementation of zero fees for individuals. By 2025, e-commerce transactions via IRIS reached 12.4 million, totaling 4.76 billion euros.
