Irish literature sees new awards and recognition
Ireland's literary scene is seeing several notable developments. Twelve bookshops across the country have been longlisted for the An Post Bookshop of the Year award, which recognizes the cultural and community roles of independent and local chain stores. The winners will be announced at the An Post Irish Book Awards on December 1, 2026.
In literary news, Nicole Flattery has been named the recipient of the 2026 Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. To mark the prize's 50th anniversary, the annual award has been increased from €10,000 to €20,000. The prize is administered by the Oscar Wilde Centre for Creative Writing at Trinity College Dublin.
Additionally, An Post has released four literary-themed stamps featuring works by Colm Tóibín, Emma Donoghue, Claire Keegan, and John McGahern. Meanwhile, Irish writers Lucy Caldwell and Caoilinn Hughes have been shortlisted for the BBC National Short Story Awards.
