Kimolos island investigation follows death of Irish teenager

A 17-year-old Irish teenager, Alex McKee, died from electrocution while showering at a holiday home on the Greek island of Kimolos on August 9. The incident occurred in an outdoor bathroom of a stone house that the family had visited many times before.

Greek authorities are investigating the cause of death, focusing on the property's electrical installation and water heater. Reports indicate the electrical system had not been modernized since the 1970s, despite the building holding a valid safety certificate. The certificate was reportedly signed in 2024 by the Mayor of Kimolos, Konstantinos Vendouris, who is also a professional electrician.

The victim's mother also experienced an electric shock while attempting to help her son, according to local physician Agapitos Xanthis. The family, residing in Cork, Ireland, is considering legal action. The Irish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is providing consular support to the family.
