IROC to race at Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington D.C
The International Race of Champions (IROC) will join the NTT INDYCAR Series Freedom 250 Grand Prix weekend on August 22‑23, holding an exhibition race on the 1.7‑mile street circuit that loops around Washington D.C.'s National Mall.
The IROC lineup, presented by Chevrolet, features former NASCAR Cup Series champions Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, Bobby Labonte, Rusty Wallace and Bill Elliott, alongside INDYCAR and Indianapolis 500 champions Tony Kanaan, Helio Castroneves and Dario Franchitti. Drivers will compete in authentic IROC Pontiac Firebirds that originally ran from 1996 to 2006.
Ray Evernham, co‑principal of IROC, said the event offers a unique opportunity for motorsports and the nation, while Freedom 250 Grand Prix chairman Bud Denker praised the celebration of racing history on historic landmarks. The weekend, part of the United States' 250th‑anniversary celebrations, is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of fans to the capital.
