Široka Kula marks 35th anniversary of Homeland War civilian deaths

In Široka Kula, Croatia, officials and citizens gathered to mark the 35th anniversary of the deaths of civilians during the Homeland War in autumn 1991. The commemoration included a Holy Mass at the Church of Saint Matthew, led by Bishop Marko Medo, who reflected on the tragic loss of innocent lives, including children and the elderly.

Following the mass, a ceremony was held at a memorial dedicated to the victims of World War II and the Homeland War. Attendees laid wreaths and lit candles to honor the 47 innocent victims from the areas of Široka Kula, Lički Osik, Ostrvica, and Mušaluk.

Among the participants were state officials, including State Secretary Darko Nekić, as well as regional and local leaders such as Lika-Senj County Prefect Ernest Petry and Gospić Mayor Darko Milinović. The event specifically remembered those whose remains were recovered from pits on Mount Ljubovo, including victims from the mass killings that occurred on October 13, 1991.
