Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina Homeland War commemorat

Overview

In late August 2026, Croatia held the 30th National Sports Competition for Volunteers and Veterans of the Homeland War in Zagreb, involving approximately 900 participants. Throughout September, various commemorations were held across Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to honor veterans and those lost during the Homeland War. In Bilje, officials including Osijek-Baranja County Prefect Nataša Tramišak paid respects to mark the 35th anniversary of the September 1991 attacks, which resulted in the deaths of 11 Croatian defenders. In Sisak, ceremonies featured a parade of over 600 veterans and a formal academy honoring the defense of the city and the Barutana barracks. In Vitez, the Day of Holders of War Decorations was observed by high-ranking officials, including Dragan Čović. Representative Darijana Filipović emphasized the importance of maintaining an “equal Croatian voice” as a debt to the veteran generation. Other regional observances included a sports event for war invalids in Slatina, a memorial for the 119th Brigade in Buzet, and a formal session in Voćin. By early September, commemorations expanded to address specific war crimes and massacres. In Grabovica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, ceremonies marked the 33rd anniversary of the massacre of 33 Croatian civilians. Dragan Čović emphasized the need for truth and justice, noting that the remains of 17 victims have not yet been found. Concerns were also raised regarding the disposal of potentially carcinogenic construction waste near the memorial site. In Croatia, Kusonje held services for the 35th anniversary of the deaths of 20 defenders killed in a 1991 ambush, as well as a 1993 mine incident. In Biloj Vlaka, honors were paid to Tomislav Kardum and Šime Džepina, killed in a 1994 ambush. Additionally, Koprivnica marked the 35th anniversary of its wartime Information Center.
