Minas Gerais researchers rediscover rare and potentially extinct plants
Researchers have rediscovered rare plant species in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero region of Minas Gerais, some of which had not been seen in nature for over 100 years and were considered potentially extinct.
The discoveries were made within protected areas maintained by the mining company Vale as part of the Project for the Conservation of Rare and Endemic Species of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving universities, research institutions, and Vale through the Rede Propagar network.
Among the rediscovered species are Paepalanthus magalhaesii and Coracoralina amoena, commonly known as “sempre-vivas” or “chuveirinho.” These endemic plants are characteristic of the region's ferruginous soil and are notable for their ability to survive extreme thermal and water stress. Scientists noted that the plants' unique resilience offers significant potential for research in genetics, biotechnology, and pharmacology.
