Rare plant rediscovery in Minas Gerais

Overview

Researchers in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, have rediscovered rare plant species previously thought to be potentially extinct. The species identified include Paepalanthus magalhaesii and Coracoralina amoena, which are endemic to the ‘campos rupestres’ ecosystem.

These plants, characterized by their ability to survive extreme thermal and water stress in ferruginous soil, had not been observed in nature for several decades. The discovery was facilitated by the Conservation Project for Rare and Endemic Species of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, a collaborative initiative involving the mining company Vale, various universities, and research institutions through the Rede Propagar network.

The plants were located within protected areas maintained by Vale across the municipalities of Itabirito, Rio Acima, and Ouro Preto. Scientists noted that the resilience of these species offers significant potential for research in biotechnology, genetics, and pharmacology.
