Islamabad announces traffic and flight disruptions for Independence Day

Authorities in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have announced significant logistical adjustments for Independence Day celebrations scheduled for August 13-14, 2026.

To maintain traffic flow, the National Highways and Motorway Police will prohibit heavy vehicle entry into the twin cities from midnight on August 12 until midnight on August 14. Islamabad police have implemented a comprehensive traffic diversion plan for smaller vehicles, involving closures of the Expressway and Faisal Avenue between Koral Chowk and Khayaban Chowk, as well as various loops around Faizabad and Rawal Dam. Additionally, several local trails, including Trails 2, 3, 4, and 5, will be closed on August 13.

In the aviation sector, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has issued a notice to all flights operating at Islamabad International Airport. Due to planned air exercises and military flyovers, pilots have been instructed to carry extra fuel reserves to account for potential delays in takeoffs and landings. The PAA noted that aircraft may be required to hold in the air during these ceremonial activities.
