Islamabad deploys shipping containers to block routes ahead of PTI protest
Authorities in Islamabad have deployed rows of shipping containers across major junctions and entry points to the city's Red Zone. These barriers are intended to restrict the movement of demonstrators and protect sensitive areas, including Parliament and foreign embassies, ahead of a planned march by supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The march, organized by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, was originally scheduled for September 27 but has been postponed to October 4. Despite the delay, the steel barriers remain in place at locations such as Faizabad and Margalla Avenue, causing traffic diversions and disruptions for residents in Islamabad and neighboring Rawalpindi.
Imran Khan has been imprisoned since 2023 on various charges, which his party maintains are politically motivated. The security arrangements have incurred significant costs; reports indicate the capital police initially requested Rs820 million to cover container rentals, accommodation, and meals for personnel brought in from Punjab and Sindh.
