Islamabad vigil honors 10 climbers killed in Broad Peak avalanche

A candlelight vigil was held in Islamabad to honor 10 climbers killed in an avalanche on Broad Peak. Mountaineers, diplomats, and civil society members gathered at a sports complex to remember those lost in the July 30 disaster.

Among the deceased was the renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja. The avalanche struck an international expedition, resulting in the deaths of six Nepalese climbers. Nepal’s ambassador to Pakistan, Rita Dhital, attended the vigil, praising the Pakistani rescuers and the Alpine Club of Pakistan for their efforts.

Search teams recently concluded an operation that recovered the remains of eight climbers, though two bodies have not yet been found. Pakistani mountaineer Sirbaz Khan, who led the recovery team, described the arduous mission to retrieve the climbers from the high-altitude mountain.
