Nedžad Grabus elected as new Reis-ul-Ulema of Islamic Community in BiH
Nedžad Grabus, the former Mufti of Sarajevo, has been elected as the 14th Reis-ul-Ulema (Grand Mufti) of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The election took place via secret ballot at the Gazi Husrev-beg Library in Sarajevo, where Grabus secured 230 votes from a 398-member electoral body. His main competitors were Mensur Malkić, who received 128 votes, and Salem Dedović, who received 28 votes.
Grabus will succeed Husein Kavazović, who has led the institution since 2012. The official handover of the menšura, the document confirming his legal appointment, is scheduled for November 15 in Sarajevo, where he will also take his oath. His seven-year mandate is set to run from 2026 to 2033.
A professor of theology with a doctorate in Islamic studies, Grabus previously served as the Mufti of Ljubljana and President of the Mešihat of the Islamic Community in Slovenia from 2006 to 2021. During his tenure in Slovenia, he notably led the construction of the Muslim Cultural Center in Ljubljana. In his new role, Grabus emphasized the importance of institutional autonomy, strengthening the status of imams, and fostering connections with the diaspora.
