Nedžad-ef. Grabus elected as new reisu-l-ulema
Overview
On October 10, 2026, Nedžad-ef. Grabus was elected as the new reisu-l-ulema of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following a secret ballot by an electoral body of 398 members—including imams, muftis, and directors of Islamic institutions—held at the Gazi Husrev-beg Library in Sarajevo, Grabus secured the votes necessary to win in the first round.
Grabus, a professor of theology and the current Mufti of Sarajevo, defeated two other candidates: Mensur-ef. Malkić and Salem-ef. Dedović. He succeeds Husein Kavazović, who has held the position since 2012. His election was noted for its peaceful administrative transition.
Grabus’s professional background includes serving as the Mufti of Ljubljana and President of the Mešihat in Slovenia from 2006 to 2021, where he notably led the construction of the Muslim Cultural Center in Ljubljana. His campaign platform focused on strengthening the authority and unity of the Islamic Community, ensuring institutional autonomy, improving the status of imams, and increasing the engagement of youth and women within its institutions. He also emphasized the development of endowments (vakufs), enhancing education, and strengthening connections with the diaspora.
The new leader will serve a seven-year term from 2026 to 2033. A formal ceremony to present the ‘menšura’, the official document confirming his appointment, is scheduled for November 15 at the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque in Sarajevo, where Grabus will also take his oath.
