Islamic organizations in Serbia agree to unify after 20 years

Two major Islamic organizations in Serbia, the Mešihat and the Riyasat of the Islamic Community, have signed a 23-point charter to unify their structures in Novi Pazar. This agreement ends a division that has existed since 2007, which had previously split mosques and religious leadership within the country.

Under the new agreement, all Muslims in Serbia will be united under a single Islamic Community regardless of nationality. The unified body will be headquartered in Novi Pazar, while maintaining cultural and national ties with Sarajevo. The Sarajevo-based Riyasat will serve as the supreme institution, and the Sandžak Mufti will lead the unified structure in Serbia.

Husein-ef. Kavazović, the Reisul-ulema of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, congratulated the leaders, describing the move as a historic step toward overcoming long-standing divisions. Mevlud Efendi Dudić, President of the Mešihat, emphasized that the unification represents a victory for unity and the shared values of the community.
