Isle of Wight ferry price regulation under consideration by Prime Minister

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has agreed to consider proposals to regulate ferry prices for the Isle of Wight. Responding to Isle of Wight East MP Joe Robertson, the Prime Minister stated he would ‘look seriously’ at any proposals to control fares, noting that similar regulatory powers helped reduce bus fares in Greater Manchester.

MP Joe Robertson described high ferry costs as the area’s ‘number one cost of living issue,’ arguing that expensive travel harms tourism and limits access to healthcare and education. He characterized the private equity control over island access as a ‘unique injustice.’

Wightlink CEO Katy Taylor responded to the potential regulation, acknowledging the importance of affordable travel while warning of significant financial pressures. Taylor cited rising fuel costs, increased national insurance, business rates, and new government emissions levies as major challenges. She noted that many residents use discounted products, stating that the average Islander fare is approximately £39 per car crossing.

Monthly roundtable meetings organized by the Department for Transport are scheduled to begin later this month to discuss ferry services.
