Isle of Wight infrastructure and transport developments

The Isle of Wight is addressing infrastructure and economic challenges through local development and potential national intervention.

Local authorities have announced a £1.83 million overhaul of the Vittlefields Cross junction to improve road safety, with construction expected to run from June 2027 to March 2029. Concurrently, Visit Isle of Wight has proposed a new stepped business levy to adjust funding based on business size and sector to support destination marketing.

On a national level, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has agreed to ‘look seriously’ at proposals to regulate ferry prices. Local MP Joe Robertson identified high ferry costs as the island’s ‘number one cost of living issue,’ citing the impact on tourism and access to essential services. While Wightlink acknowledged the need for affordability, the company warned of financial pressures from rising fuel costs, business rates, and government emissions levies. The Department for Transport is scheduled to begin monthly roundtable meetings to discuss ferry services.
