Italian coastal towns awarded 2026 Green Flag for child‑friendly beaches

The Italian pediatric association has granted the 2026 Bandiera Verde (Green Flag) to a series of seaside municipalities, recognizing them as especially suitable for children and families. Gaeta, Silvi, Ispica, Sirolo, Pescara and Melissa were all presented with the flag during a ceremony held in Termoli.

The award criteria include safe and shallow waters, spacious beach areas, constant lifeguard presence, dedicated facilities for young children, and accessible rest‑room and refreshment services. Local officials highlighted the flag as a symbol of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable, inclusive tourism and to boost the attractiveness of their coasts for family vacations.

Mayor Cristian Leccese of Gaeta, Mayor Pierenzo Muraglie of Ispica, Mayor Luca Mauro of Melissa and other municipal leaders praised the recognition as validation of their work to improve environmental quality, safety and services, while also noting the potential economic benefit for the summer season.

The Bandiera Verde, awarded since 2008 after a survey of more than 160 pediatricians, complements other beach certifications such as the Bandiera Blu and Bandiera Lilla, reinforcing a broader strategy to position Italy’s coastlines as safe, sustainable and family‑friendly destinations.
