Rights groups, including Ir Amim and Peace Now, warn that the project could bisect the West Bank, severing geographic continuity between its northern and southern regions and isolating East Jerusalem from Palestinian territories.

While the Jerusalem District Court recently refused a request to freeze previous tenders, legal challenges against the overall E1 plan remain under review. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has supported the plan, stating it would ‘bury’ a Palestinian state, while Palestinian officials and various international bodies have condemned the expansion as a violation of international law that undermines the viability of a future Palestinian state.
