West Bank settlement expansion: 100 colonial plans advanced in 2026
Israeli planning authorities have significantly advanced settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. According to the Wall and Colonization Resistance Commission, 100 colonial plans covering 12,300 units were advanced between January 1 and September 13, 2026. In East Jerusalem, 53 plans for 5,783 units were documented.
Reports indicate that the settlement network has grown into a sprawling system of roads and highways. Peace Now estimates there are 163 total settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, currently housing approximately 750,000 Israelis. Projections suggest the settler population could reach one million by 2030.
In the Jordan Valley, Israel is reportedly planning approximately 40 new settlement outposts and a 500km barrier along the frontier with Jordan. Additionally, Palestinian officials have noted a strategy of using military orders regarding antiquities to restrict Palestinian land use and construction in areas such as Qalqilya, Tulkarm, Jenin, and Salfit. The E1 settlement project is highlighted as a major development that could sever the geographical connection between the northern and southern West Bank.
