Israel airstrike on Tyre kills at least eight, UN to launch law‑violation probe

An Israeli airstrike hit the eastern edge of the historic port city of Tyre in southern Lebanon, killing at least eight civilians, according to the Lebanese health ministry. The strike followed the first‑ever full evacuation order issued for the city’s Christian quarter.

Israel has also carried out airstrikes on other southern villages, including Tayr Debba and Deir Qanoun en‑Nahr, with the Lebanese health ministry reporting a total of 12–16 deaths in recent attacks. Hezbollah‑linked rocket fire and Israeli drone strikes have continued despite a conditional truce.

United Nations human‑rights chief Volker Turk announced that a team of investigators will be deployed to Lebanon next week to assess possible violations of international humanitarian law by all parties. Al Jazeera’s reporter Obaida Hitto warned that the Geneva Convention requires safe evacuation routes, which he said are not being provided.

Iran warned of “crushing measures” if Israeli operations persist, while the UN Security Council and the EU have called for de‑escalation and an investigation into the legality of the strikes. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has framed the attacks as part of a broader fight against Hezbollah.

Since the conflict reignited on March 2, Lebanon’s Ministry of Health estimates more than 3,600 people have been killed and over 11,000 injured, while Israel reports 29 soldiers and one civilian contractor killed in Lebanon.
