Israeli Defense Minister Says Troops Can Operate Freely in Lebanon

Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Kac announced that Israeli forces are authorised to act without any restrictions in Lebanon and will remain in a "security zone" extending roughly ten kilometres into Lebanese territory. He said the troops will stay there as long as Hezbollah poses a threat, even after a new cease‑fire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect on Friday.

Israeli air strikes in southern Lebanon on Friday killed at least 18–20 civilians, while the Israeli army reported the deaths of four of its soldiers, including a senior officer. Hezbollah officials said their group has complied with the cease‑fire. The Lebanese government described the Israeli‑controlled area as an illegal occupation and a violation of international law.

The development comes as Iran and the United States hold talks in Switzerland, with Iran warning that the Hormuz Strait will remain closed until a cease‑fire is secured in Lebanon. Iran also stressed that the Lebanese cease‑fire will be a key topic in the negotiations.
