Israel and Lebanon face diplomatic deadlock in border negotiations

Diplomatic efforts to mediate between Israel and Lebanon face significant hurdles despite ongoing technical discussions facilitated by the United States. While a U.S. State Department official expressed satisfaction with the progress of working groups regarding terminology and maps, reports indicate a potential freeze in high-level political meetings. Some sources suggest that new rounds of discussions in Rome may not occur until late summer or early September.

A primary point of contention involves a demand from Israel and the U.S. for Hezbollah to dismantle a military complex located on the Ali al-Tahar ridge in the Nabatieh region. Israel has indicated it may take military action to control the ridge if the Lebanese army cannot convince Hezbollah to evacuate.

Additionally, disagreements persist regarding the implementation of a June 2026 framework agreement. This agreement involves the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from certain areas in southern Lebanon to be replaced by the Lebanese army through pilot programs. The Lebanese delegation is pushing for the immediate application of this model in Bint Jbeil and Al-Khiam to facilitate the return of displaced residents.
