Israel and Lebanon reach new ceasefire agreement amid Hezbollah opposition

Israel and Lebanon concluded negotiations in Washington, under U.S. auspices, to implement a renewed armistice. The deal calls for a complete halt to Hezbollah rocket fire and the withdrawal of all Hezbollah members from South Lebanon, alongside the creation of pilot zones where the Lebanese army will have exclusive control.

Hezbollah, however, publicly rejected the agreement, demanding a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory, raising doubts about the ceasefire’s immediate viability. Israeli strikes in Lebanon during the talks had already caused at least nine fatalities, including civilians and a soldier. The parties agreed to reconvene for a further round of discussions on 22 June to work toward a broader peace and security accord.
