Israel and Lebanon set for Rome peace talks on July 15‑16

Israel and Lebanon will meet in Rome on 15‑16 July 2026 for the sixth round of negotiations aimed at implementing the 26 June framework agreement brokered by the United States. The pact calls for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from designated “pilot zones” in southern Lebanon, contingent on the disarmament of the Hezbollah militia and the redeployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces.

Lebanon has made the removal of Israeli troops from the two pilot zones a pre‑condition for its participation, while Israel insists the pull‑out must be linked to full Hezbollah disarmament. The United States will monitor implementation and train Lebanese forces. Hezbollah has rejected the agreement, calling it a humiliation and refusing to disarm.

Since the conflict flared in March, more than 4,300 people, mainly civilians, have been killed. Sporadic attacks continue despite the cease‑fire, with the latest Israeli strike killing two civilians in the south. Italy, led by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, is hosting the talks, positioning Rome as a diplomatic hub for the process.
