Israel approves national AI strategy to become global superpower
The Israeli government unanimously approved a work plan for a newly created National Artificial Intelligence Directorate, aiming to transform the country into a "global AI superpower." Led by retired Brig‑Gen. Erez Askal, the plan focuses on three pillars: attracting talent and diaspora experts, expanding high‑performance computing capacity by providing 5,000 advanced GPUs annually from 2027‑2032 for academia and the public sector, and establishing fast‑track incubators to accelerate AI applications.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu highlighted the "significant budget" for human capital, supercomputing infrastructure, and applied laboratories, stressing the initiative’s role in strengthening Israel’s economic, technological and security resilience. Analysts note the move reinforces Israel’s strategic partnership with the United States, positioning the country as a vital ally in AI, cyber, defense and life‑science technologies.
The strategy is part of a broader effort to deepen Israel’s role in high‑tech innovation and to secure its standing among world powers in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
