Israeli authorities release suspects in West Bank settler attacks
Israeli police have released most of the ten individuals arrested last Monday for suspected involvement in violent attacks against a journalist and foreign diplomats in the West Bank. Following a court appearance, four suspects were released under restrictive conditions, including house arrest until October 29. A fifth suspect remains in custody, while police have indicated they will appeal the release of one individual.
The arrests followed international condemnation after a series of incidents during the annual olive harvest. On Friday, The Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was attacked by masked settlers while documenting the harvest, resulting in her being hospitalized. On Saturday, a convoy of European diplomats, including representatives from France, Belgium, and Poland, was targeted by settlers near Taibé.
Human rights organization Yesh Din has recorded 125 physical attacks on Palestinians participating in the olive harvest over the last 24 days. While the arrests were prompted by pressure from the United States, critics point to historical data from Yesh Din suggesting that a vast majority of investigations into settler violence result in no charges or convictions.
