Israeli settler and military violence in West Bank

Overview

During the annual olive harvest, Israeli settlers launched a series of violent attacks across multiple West Bank villages, targeting Palestinian farmers, international journalists, and European diplomats. In Abu Falah, approximately 80 masked settlers attacked farmers and set fire to olive trees and vehicles. During these incidents, Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was severely assaulted despite wearing press identification. Levine reported that a group of several dozen masked settlers approached the area and began lighting olive trees on fire; during the ensuing chaos, which included gunfire and tear gas, she was knocked to the ground and kicked repeatedly. She sustained serious injuries, including four fractured vertebrae and a broken rib, requiring surgery.

In Taybeh, a convoy of European diplomats from Belgium, France, and Poland was surrounded by settlers on all-terrain vehicles. Witnesses reported that settlers demanded identification and threw stones, resulting in a smashed window on a Belgian consular vehicle. Bernard Baudoux, the 78-year-old French mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries, was reportedly knocked to the ground and beaten with metal bars.

In response, Israeli authorities launched ‘Operation Olive Leaf,’ which included clearing illegal outposts and arresting ten suspects. However, an Israeli court in Jerusalem has since ordered the release of nine of these suspects. While one individual remains in custody, the others have been placed under house arrest.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the situation as ‘out of control,’ noting that journalists and diplomats are facing increasing attacks. While the United States, France, Belgium, and Poland have called for crackdowns, rights groups such as Yesh Din have criticized the tendency to release suspects shortly after arrest.
