Israel begins digging crocodile trenches at Ketziot Prison

Israel has started excavating a 170‑metre trench inside the high‑security wing of Ketziot Prison in the Negev Desert. The trench is intended to house Nile crocodiles as a deterrent for Palestinian inmates, including Hamas members. The pilot project was announced by National Security Minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir after Environment Minister Idit Silman reclassified the crocodile as a “domesticated wild animal,” clearing legal obstacles. A budget of 21 million shekels (about US$6‑7 million) has been allocated for the initiative, which includes plans for animal housing, care, and staff training. The move has drawn criticism from legal advisers, environmental experts, and Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority, which unanimously opposed the proposal. It remains unclear whether crocodiles will actually be placed in the trench.
