UN child‑war‑crime report, prison abuse & crocodile plan
Entities: Moazzam Begg · Palestinian Prisoners Association · United Nations · Malik Hani Cibril · Israel
Overview
The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry’s final report (23 June 2026) documented over 20,000 Palestinian child deaths and 44,000 injuries between October 2023 and October 2025, prompting renewed UN condemnation and Israeli claims of bias. Palestinian rights groups continued to record systematic torture, starvation, sleep deprivation, electric shocks and denial of medical care in Israeli detention facilities, affecting children, women, the elderly and the wounded. Mid‑July investigations identified roughly 3,500 Palestinians under administrative detention, including about 200 children, and reported dozens of deaths, graves, refrigerated storage of corpses and up to 2,000 missing detainees. By 13 July 2026 abuse had escalated, with beatings, food and medical deprivation, scabies outbreaks, partial paralysis and sexual assault; administrative detainees were estimated at 9,300 with around 100 deaths in custody. On 14 July 2026 Palestinian prisoner organisations and NGOs launched an international campaign demanding independent UN, ICC and Geneva Convention investigations into the alleged sexual and physical abuse, labeling the acts as war crimes and crimes against humanity.
A new testimony from a female detainee in Damun prison, recorded by the Prisoners’ Affairs Authority on 29 July, described repeated physical harassment, forced naked body searches, severe overcrowding, cold, insect infestation and lack of food, bedding and hygiene supplies. The report called for urgent international action to protect Palestinian women prisoners.
Israel’s Environment Minister re‑classified Nile crocodiles on 18 July, clearing a legal path for a $6‑7 million crocodile‑moat project at Ketziot high‑security wing. Excavation began on 22 July, and rights groups continued to condemn the scheme. On 28 July Moazzam Begg of CAGE International called the plan “vicious” and “nonsensical,” likening it to a modern “Alcatraz” and warning it could amount to inhumane treatment comparable to already reported abusive prison conditions.
