Israeli Military Closes Detainee Death Probes Without Charges

The Israel Defense Forces opened 57 criminal investigations into the deaths of Palestinian and Lebanese detainees held in military detention facilities equipped with CCTV. Seven of the cases involved captives shot dead, but the army failed to identify suspects and none of the investigations led to indictments. An additional 19 probes were launched into alleged beatings, unlawful use of force, and looting by soldiers; only two indictments resulted, one of which was later withdrawn after the alleged victim was returned to Gaza before court testimony.

Two criminal charges that were filed involved a truck driver who delivered detainees to the Sde Teiman prison and a case of a detainee who was sent back to Gaza without being allowed to testify. Most other alleged abuses, including theft of household appliances and looting, were resolved with disciplinary measures rather than prosecutions. The IDF maintains that the investigations are conducted in accordance with international law, while human‑rights groups and the media have highlighted the lack of accountability and the symbolic image of a bound, blindfolded Palestinian man released on social media.
