Israel conducts attacks in southern Lebanon despite ceasefire

Israeli forces have conducted several attacks in southern Lebanon despite an ongoing ceasefire. Reports indicate that Israeli soldiers opened fire with automatic weapons in the western part of Hadatha and moved military vehicles through the town. Additionally, Israeli airstrikes targeted the Al-Qantara area in the Huceyr Valley, and artillery fire hit a municipal building in Beni Hayyan.

Other areas, including Hiyam and Ayterun, were reportedly subjected to machine-gun fire and artillery. While there are no immediate reports of casualties from these specific incidents, the attacks highlight the fragility of the truce, which has been extended multiple times since April 17.

In response to the regional instability, Lebanese President Joseph Avn expressed a preference for extending the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Avn stated that UNIFIL’s presence is vital for stability and for coordinating with the Lebanese army to help residents remain in their villages. He noted that if a mandate extension is not possible, Lebanon would seek a legal formula to ensure international forces continue to operate in coordination with the national military.
